Representatives of a Chinese company specialized in railway design are currently passing through Toronto to discuss the possible construction of a railway leading to chromite deposit in the Ring of Fire. China, which has great need of this scarce resource, considers that it has any advantage to work for the completion of this ambitious project of mine development.
The mining exploration company KWG Toronto hosts this week a dozen representatives of a Chinese firm Consulting Engineering, China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group.
Chinese geologists and engineers should carry out a feasibility study for the construction of a railway linking some 330 km the large chromite deposit Ring of Fire to the railway which stops at Nakina in the northwest the province.
$ 1.6 billion for a railway
The construction of the railway, estimated at $ 1.6 billion, is essential to the development of the mining project, according to the CEO of KWG Frank Smeenk
China has always had an interest. China has not chromite product and still 60% of stainless steel in the world [...] including chromite is an important ingredient.
Frank Smeenk, CEO of KWG
KWG has mining rights to several chromite deposits in the Ring of Fire. Frank Smeenk argues that Canada and China have much to gain by jointly developing the mining project.
A first step
Jean-Charles Cachon, business management analyst sees a good eye involvement of the Chinese engineering firm.
"Exactly because the study (feasibility) will come out of this agreement will allow then to move forward by having more precise figures, for example, the cost of the railway and the road that goes along the railway, "he said.
The study could lay the groundwork for a possible investment. In this regard, Ontario has already committed a billion dollars for the project.
Prime Minister Trudeau hinted Thursday that his government is also preparing to make an announcement on the development of the Ring of Fire.
