Ontario Begins Follow-Up Mission to China

Mission to Focus on Increased Trade and Investment in Ontario

Today, Deputy Premier Deb Matthews and Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade Michael Chan are beginning a trade mission to China to strengthen economic, political and cultural ties with Ontario's second-largest trading partner and the world's largest economy.

This mission will build on the success of the Premier's two recent business missions to China - which have brought an estimated total of $3.8 billion worth of investment to the province and approximately 3,500 jobs to Ontario - and will lay the groundwork for future agreements. The Deputy Premier and Minister will meet with Ontario companies in China to sign additional agreements that have been finalized since the Premier's last visit.

The mission itinerary includes visits to five key cities - Beijing, Zhengzhou, Shanghai, Shaoxing and Hong Kong - and will formalize agreements and memoranda of understanding within the agri-food, life sciences, financial technology, information communications technology and manufacturing sectors.

Attracting new investment and helping the province's businesses compete globally is part of the government's economic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes investing in talent and skills, including helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. The plan is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history and investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. The plan is also helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement.
