Message: Province's announcement of Ring of Fire agreement is premature, say First Nations

From tequilarose's post:

Wabasse said he recognizes the concerns of the other communities but also appreciates the pressure on the provincial government to act.

“It is premature in a way but I think we need to start moving forward on our processes,” Wabasse said. “It’s not to say we’re not going to do away with our processes we have in place. We still need to work on those. The announcement is contingent on that.”

Both Yellowhead and Wabasse said they remain optimistic the nine Matawa communities – which signed a Regional Framework Agreement with Ontario in 2014 and have been participating in a jurisdictional table with the government – can move forward cooperatively.

Comment: So, there you have it.  Wabasse has openly hinted that Eabametoong and Neskantaga are failing to cooperate.  Not that they have not been consulted, because we all know that those talks have been going on not just for months, but years.  I mean what the "H" have the First Nations been discussing among themselves all this time.  Obviously neither one wants to mention the other in their own announcements that have been published through the number of news sources we have seen; just look, no mention.  Now the three (Webequie, Nibinamik and Marten Falls) are trying to back paddle here to keep the peace, when really their saying to Neskantaga and Eabametoong to jump on board the band wagon and just accept what they rightfully deserve; upstream from the Ring of Fire.

I am tired of hearing this "free, prior and informed consent" line being used over and over again.  You have all been informed, so you are either in or out.  Deals have been made, and now we are simply looking at those who don't like what they are about to receive.  So these Matawan Chiefs need to sit down with each other and figure this out, then approach the government once the infighting stops.  In the meantime lets move forward. You can all sit down and count your money later after your communities get their much needed infrastructure, jobs, power.....Quit the greed and search for the common good for your people instead, and try to remember that the rest of Ontario and Canada exists.

TM.
