WOW... Wataynikaneyap Power is a consortium of more than 20 remote Northwestern Ontario First Nations that is planning to connect 18 of them to the provincial energy grid by 2024. The group had been chosen by the province last year to construct the lines for the 1,800 kilometre project.
The first phase of their plan would increase energy capacity from Ignace to Pickle Lake, which the consortium last year said was expected to begin construction in 2018 with targeted completion in 2020. Reinforcing those lines is a required first step before extending further north.
I'm hoping this announcement is about shovels in the ground but it sounds like it might be more about power line construction. Thing is, they need roads to get the equipment in to do the lines. Sounds like a win win situation for us. Reinforcing lines with target date of 2020 puts pressure on getting roads started. Tomorrow will be interesting.
