Smith says,
“Clearly we need to get a road built into that Ring of Fire. It’s a tremendous opportunity. We have to work with our First Nations groups to ensure that that happens,” Smith said, adding Natural Resources and Forestry Minister Greg Rickford and Premier Ford have been working on the file. “I know the conversations are ongoing. Hopefully there’s some good news on that front soon too.”
On the other hand there is this report:
The NDP's Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation critic is growing frustrated over the lack of consultations with First Nations regarding the massive Ring of Fire Project.
Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa says Matawa Chiefs sent a welcoming letter to Doug Ford on July 9 asking to re-engage in vital regional negotiations, however no meetings have been set.
"The historic regional framework agreement on the Ring of Fire has stalled because the government hasn't engaged with the Mattawa First Nation since the election."
Mamakwa is asking the government to begin the dialogue today so future mines can go forward in a way that they honour the Treaty and be mutually beneficial for all parties.
