Ee,
In saying mine ownership I was not referring to a full, but partial equity stake in the company. Glenn Nolan had talked about offered a 10% stake in Noront years ago to give them a controlling interest in all Ring of Fire claims.
This is a post from a past forum member who was, and still is, very well respected; Babjak1:

Also, back in around Nov. of last year Glenn Nolan of Noront stated that Noront had offered Matawa 10% of Noront in the form of equity ownership.
And we saw nothing transpire with that.
Here is where I am going with this:
When I read those two sentences again in the "gold story", I'm getting this feeling of....
"Hey FN's since you can't quite yet agree on stuff, and we very generously offered 10% of Noront...we decided to do the following......
..FN's the clock is ticking for you..
if you keep waiting..we'll start selling off the ROF in exchange for exploration.
So in effect due to your delay tactics..your offered 10% will amount to less of the ROF property, because the funded exploration will result in that company getting an interest in the property.
The gov't funded the FN's the money to buy a stake in Hydro one.
The gov't could easily fund the FN's to buy the 10% ownership of Noront.
That money could be used to explore for more gold if Noront wished to and this would not require Noront giving away interest in the ROF property.
How many times have we heard the Fn's using the expression..."in my backyard."
well, guess what.... part of ..."what you call your backyard" is about to be given away if you don't get your act together."....
Something that in theory would have worked at the time, but since Matawa was being unreasonable it did not. I still suspect that such an offer is still on the table, in the same way the Ontario government paid for Hydro One shares that were simply given to First Nations. Why? Well. Unfortunately, here in Canada, that is the cost of doing business. Seems that the First Nations must get a cut of everything. Whether we like it, or NOT...I'll stop there...Fair, or unfair.... It is the price the taxpayer pays, in the name of "Financial Reconciliation".
TORONTO – The province of Ontario has completed the sale of 14.4 million common shares of Hydro One to OFN Power Holdings. OFN Power is a limited partnership owned by Ontario First Nations Sovereign Wealth, which is in turn owned by the 129 First Nations in the province.
The shares were priced at $18 each for a total price of $259.0 million. OFN Power now holds 2.4% of Hydro One. The Ontario government now holds about 47.4% of Hydro One.
The sale is part of the province’s healing and reconciliation plan with indigenous people. The agreement in principle between Ontario and its First Nations was announced in July 12, 2016.
