I have to agree that there have been several cringe-worthy presentations.

In fact, once the feedback was so strong that he did step aside and let the scientists present. Or maybe that was coincidence. 

But he has also made presentations in past in which he was in good form and successfully generated excitement. There may still have been too much padding and maybe still some errors, but those talks were still effective in generating enthusiasm.

I have some minor research background, but am far from considering myself an expert, so am probably more tolerant /less hyper-aware of errors than you. But even I have made this kind of commentary before, that we could benefit by having a speaker that is more comfortable with the science. 

Someone who talks like they live in the field, but who is also not too dry.

There are people who specialize in this kind of speaking. And/or in training others to do it better. Seems like an investment that should have been made, and still should be.
