You can earn activity points by filling your profile with information about yourself (what city you live in, your favorite team, blogs etc.)
I recall we worked with the DataPlay storage technology, but I can't remember if that had any flash associated with it....but if memory serves, it was not....which confirms the notion that it doesn't have to be flash.
