No, I hadn't noticed, but yes I think I now see the distinction. Both 5 and 7 refer to the "handshake" between the device and the flash memory chip (SIM or MicroSD) in the plug assembly. During this "handshake" the device activates a memory integrity test.

In Claim 5 the test is performed by simply insertng the chip into the plug assembly of an electrically charged (by battery) device. In Claim 7 the test is performed by inserting a battery into a device that already has a chip installed, but has no power. Inserting the battery provides the power and activates the test.

At least that's how I read it. The more I look at this patent, the more I like our chances.
