Just talking to RBC,(MY MAIN BROKER) He said you can do a transfer in kind which triggers a DEEMED DISPOSITION. So, if there is a gain on the stock you are TRANSFERRING you have to declare it by filling out a mailed SUMMARY of DISPOSITION. I avoided this paper work by getting my broker to sell the amount of shares and repurchasing them in my TFSA within a couple of minutes. It doesnt matter how you do it, it can/is done, but whatever way you do it, you CANNOT avoid the tax implications.
To transfer shares out of a registered account, you will also be taxed at your current tax rate, dont forget this withdrawal will be ADDED onto your top end income and there may be 10% withheld by the institution for tax purposes. The advantages of doing this would become attractive IF YOU KNEW that your stock was going to appreciate in multiples within the next while.
The simple thing for anyone to do, is do your own math and realise the pro,s and con,s of a situation like this.
FROM RBC
The deadline for tax loss selling is Dec 24th.
The earliest date for TFSA contributions is Jan 3rd.
