In an editorial I wrote a few years ago I proffered the notion that the EU was a financial foot in the door in the effort to creep ever closer to globalization. It didn't make sense because there was no way to get consensus of the multiple nations. The united states "works" because of the over reacing power of the federal government.

In Europe there are multiple governments that each have their own agenda and governmental philosophies. I beleive the rulers of the globe thought the common currency would be the lead into a common government. But it is hard to get 11 spoiled brats to agree on anything let along give up the power they so jealously covet.
