Brentie,
Yes, they're testing it as a prandial insulin. Very small study (8 male T1 subjects). Subects received a 400 cal meal 10, 45, or 90 min after a dose of the oral insulin. They were followed for 6 hours. My key takeaways (correct me if I read wrong - print is very small and I can't figure out how to zoom it):
Insulin max concentration 40 - 180 min irrespective of meal timing. 40 minutes will be much slower than Afrezza, and 180 min poses a risk of hypoglycemia.
Return to baseline insulin level 45 to 300 min after peak recording. Again - 5 hours - risk of hypo.
Fluctuation in insulin level undetectable in 3 out of 23 sessions. Perhaps 1 of the 8 subjects was a non-responder to this modality? That's a large %.
Basically, they're demonstrating this can work, but the kinetics won't be as slick as with Afrezza. It's going to be slower getting into the system, and slower to clear. Because of vagaries of an individual's digestive system, there's going to be a wide variation in response to this drug.
This is a very early study to show it can work - but I doubt it would be a favored choice for most people.
