That's true.  I once talked to a guy who was a B-17 tail gunner.  He said he'd always carry on an extra box of 50's. One time the pilot stopped him (weight worries). His response was "I'm covering your ass - you want me to run out of bullets with a 109 on your 6?".  He was never stopped again.
