I wouldn't worry too much about being surrounded.  Last I knew we had 42 SSBN/Trident subs out there, 24 missiles each, with multiple warheads (none of this is classified, could read about it Aviation Leak, plus 25 year old data).  They were pretty new at the time, and the D5/Trident II was going into development for deployment in '90 (I was proposal leader for all spares/repairs for the D5 OSDP, big contract - I was 27).

While I was at LMSC Sunnyvale ('77-'83), there were a couple squadrons of P-3 Orions at Moffet - right next door.  The P-3 was derived from the P-2V (Turtle). I think it is now known that the P-3 had not only a sub search, but also a destroy capability.  You now sometimes seem them being used as fire-fighters, with the bomb-bay doors open.
