Its important to remember that the GOP senators from Tennessee and Alabama (Nissan and Toyota respectively) were trying to shut down the US auto industry by blocking any bailout and putting 1.1 million American (and union) workers out of work.
I'm not sure if I'm reading between the lines well enough to understand your point.
Tennessee I know is a right to work state which is not pro union. Tennessee and Alabama both have vibrant automotive jobs in their economies due to Nissan and Toyota making cars in those states. Can it be done without the union - yes. Can it be done to the satisfaction of those states and their citizens - apparently so. What ever happened to GM's last answer to the automotive industry - the recently forgotten Saturn, they I believe recently closed down in TN. I'm not an auto industry expert so any corrections to my thoughts are welcome.
Also remember that these same senators and the right wing US media (Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, etc.) held the auto industry to a higher standard than the bank executives. Remember the corporate jet issue, remember any corresponding issue about the banks flying to DC on corporate jets?)
The whole corporate jet issue was senseless IMO. Asking Corp. executives not to fly private jets is only a cause that will shut down another job producing U.S. industry. Goverment needs to stay out of private business. Let businesses fail that spend foolishly and overpay their top people.
