Thanks for the explanation Vinny, but I do understand what shorting is, but I have a problem seeing it as beneficial in the grand scheme of things - sure traders can make profits but shorting seems to cause a "self fulfilling prophecy" effect - the shorters gang up on a stock and drive down the price just to satisfy their own greed.

Perhaps you could explain your argument that shorting provides liquidity?
