Message: Moonias says cancelled conference won't hurt reputation

The chief of Marten Falls First Nation is defending his band's reputation and ability to do business in the mineral rich Ring of Fire.

Chief Eli Moonias spoke out Friday following the controversial cancellation of a mining conference earlier this week. The ''Ring of Fire, Emerging Business, Conference'' was scheduled to start Wednesday in Thunder Bay. However, the conference was cancelled by the chief on Tuesday following media reports of participants being charged a $5,000 fee for a 45 minute private session with the chief and council. Despite the controversy, Moonias said he has no concerns over possible damage to Marten Falls reputation when it comes to attracting business partners to the Ring of Fire.

Marten Falls hired Thunder Bay's Krupp Consulting to co-ordinate the conference. Asked when he first became aware of the $5,000 private session fee, Moonias said Bob Krupp first told him one month ago. The chief said he had nothing to do with the controversial fee.
Moonias said he began considering canceling the event following the meeting.

However, that contradicts statements in an e-mail from Bob Krupp sent to TBT News earlier this week. Krupp said Marten Falls had been consulted on a regular basis on all aspects of the conference.
